1983 Johnson Powerhead issue

Hi,

I've been working on my 90hp Johnson outboard this weekend and I've been
trying to get the powerhead off the lower unit. I've got the generic shop
manual and I think I have all the bolts/nuts off, but when I put it on the
hoist, it won't break free? Is there something I'm missing?

The shop manual doesn't have many pictures of the powerhead and lower unit
seperating or really any good diagrams of how they actually connect. Has
anyone come across a powerhead that seems to have "fused" to the lower unit?

Looking for possible solutions. My 1st motor so please forgive my
ignorance.

Thanks in Advance,

Darren

The drive shaft can corrode to the power head. So some easy tapping will
separate them sometimes. IF you can get it separated a little, shoot some
liquid wrench tpye stuff up there.

Make sure to disconnect the linkage for the lower unit too. If you
dont disconnect that one it'll never break free. It should be hooked
up somewhere under the powerhead.
Real PIA when I dropped the lower unit from my 175.

Other than that, make sure to remove all the bolts around the lower
unit.
There might be one there for the zinc and other by the (forgot the name
of it)
fin. (the metal piece by the zinc and above the prop)

Lower unit shift linkage has to be disconnected. Check to see if there is a
clevis pin on the drivers side of the motor behind the shift/throttle cable
connections. Remove the pin and slide the mechanism out and the lower unit
shift rod will disconnect.

Most go ahead and remove the lower unit first as it is easier to reinstall
the powerhead without the lower unit.

After you have everything disconected that would interfer it is a
matter of cracking the gasket. Once the gasket starts to release the
powerhead separate.

Good luck

Well, I got the powerhead off last night. Apparently I need to do a little
more checking to make sure I have all of the nuts off. There were 2 nuts
tucked away that I had missed. Kind of obscure under the powerhead but
still no excuse.

After that, it basically fell apart. Too bad I had hammered on it so much!
Good learning experience though. Sometimes those shop manuals could have
better pictures/diagrams, but still.... not an excuse.

Thanks for the help everyone,

Darren

I had three of these mounted on a 12' Jon boat. It was fun.
