New Outboard Engine
 

Hi,

My family recently bought a new 6HP 4-stroke Yamaha outboard engine for
our little boat on the Adriatic Sea. It is going to replace the old 4HP
Tomos engine which is approximately 28 years old.

This summer, when we use the new engine, is there any procedures we
should take before putting it onto the boat and running it? Any special
unpacking, oiling, running in cold water before it can go to the boat
and into the sea?

Wasn't an owner's manual with the manufacturers break in instructions
provided? There is a saying RTFM or Read the Fine Manual.

Read and follow the owners manual.

You might want to crank on a hose and make sure it is going to crank and run
properly before going to the sea and having a problem.

Once you get to the lake, run the engine at varying throttle settings for
the first few hours of operation. You should not run it above 4000 rpms
except for very short/quick blasts.

To verify there are no fuel problems - run it up to about 3000 rpms and then
engage the choke. If it boggs by about 1000 rpms everything is fine. If it
does not bog choke may not be working. If it picks up speed then you have a
lean condition and need to get it fixed quick.

After the engine is good and warm and everything else checks ok, - run it
for about 15 seconds wide open and then kill the engine (don't idle). Pull
the spark plug and verify that it is burning properly.

Once you get home, pull the gearcase bottom screw and let a small amount of
grease out to verify no water from a bad seal.

That should be it. Enjoy.

Sounds like you bought it in the crate? You mentioned unpacking.

If so, be sure to drain the engine oil and add the proper volume
of the recommended oil. The oil that comes in the engine from
the factory is more of a rust preventer than a real oil and there
usually isn't enough to fill it to capacity.

The engine was bought in the US and was shipped to Croatia. It was
indeed bought in the crate (its packed in a big thing like a
refridegator) and just arrived in Croatia. I live in the UK, and will
be using it in Croatia for the holiday of 10 days, so when I arrive
there, I will have to unpack the engine, get it ready, and use it.

If there is a manual online, then it would be great to read it. Or any
kind of FAQ about engines, since I will be unpacking the engine during
my brief vacation. That is, the engine should be good-to-go almost soon
as I arrive.

1) The engine is going to be run in the salt-sea side water (Adriatic
Sea on the Croatian coast). Is there any special instructions for
sea-water versus the lake-water?
2) Since I will be the first using the engine, unpacking it from the
crane where it was shipped from the US (family just bought it in the US
and shipped it to Croatia)

3) Cranking it before putting it onto the boat - you mean outside the
house, without water, cranking it and running it for a while?

With our old engine, which was bought before I was born, what we used
to do every summer is this. After every summer we would give it to a
local mechanic who would lubricate it and put some sort of preservation
oil. Before taking it to boat, we would take it outside, take out the
spark plug, crank it blank for a few times to get the extra oil out.
Then put the spark plug, turn the engine on, run it blank (with little
fuel) in the air until the engine conbusted the extra lubrication thing
and oil (produce lots of exhaust). We would remove the fuel line, the
engine would idle (it had no idle/neutral, just low speed) If if
cranked, it was all good, if it did not, then to the mechanic.

However, this was an old 2-stroke engine, with no fuel-injection (you
had to mix the fuel with right kind of oil, for every x liters of oil,
we put x liters of fuel into the engine).
