Another mooring question
 

I am a new owner of some rental cabins in Michigan. We'd like to offer
our renters the opportunity to moor a small boat or jet ski while they
are staying with us. The lake itself is very shallow for quite a ways
from shore. Our neighbor has moorings in the ground that have chain
and a buoy attached to them. My question is where do I buy the screw
in *thingy*? I really don't even know what it's called but I'll
describe it. It's about 4 ft long with a loop on one end and a round
metal plate on the other end that is notched and bent up to facilitate
threads to screw in the ground. If anyone can help me out I'd greatly
appreciate it.

Try an RV/Mobile home dealer. I've seen similar tie downs used for
anchoring mobile trailers in wind areas. This link might give you some
ideas.

Hmmm...how about asking your neighbor where he got his? Seems simple
enough. Otherwise try your local marina/boat supply store. You are
likely to get better local info that way and maybe make some friends
(important for a new business owner!).

Often you can get substantially the same product, but without the "Marine"
label, for 1/4 the price, or less (the anchor that looks closest on this
page goes for $60/dozen, rather than $60 each). But go for the galvanized!

A bit of research, and it appears that these are manufactured by Tie Down
Engineering, Manufacturer of Danforth and Hooker anchors.

Of course you must do your homework, and inspect for corrosion and chafing
regularly!

The local power company put the power underground , took the pole and
left the guy line anchor for me to destroy the mower on. It was too
springey to beat into the ground with a sledgehammer, so after much
blood, sweat and beers and the use of a posthole digger, a large pipe
wrench with a cheater, I am now the owner of a 5' long heavily
galvanised screw (10" wide) in anchor with a forged loop on the top.
Perhaps your power company might have some they don't need anymore.
