Off and on topic in rec.boats.

Despite the netcops, rec.boats was working just fine until they appeared.

Think of it like your YC bar. Not all are discussing boats, religion
and politics come up a lot, so do women. People disagree, some storm
out in a huff.

Recently other than boating topics were labeled (OT) to make it easy for
those who were not interested to filter out. Without the OT, there
would be little discussion here, Although I have never asked a boating
question without someone offering helpful advice.

Face the fact that netcops don't work, they rile people who will post
just to harass them. If you REALLY want to stop OT, just ignore the OT
posts (but that would make for a dull group)

For the purists, the filter on OT should work just fine

For the wannabe netcops -- get a life!

No, it's me April 18th 05 06:22 PM

Jim,,

The netcop is an common reaction to a NG that has been overtaken with
political trolls. I find his posts a troll and just as offensive as the
other OT trolls. To use your analogy, Think of it as your YC bar. The OT
posters are the drunk obnoxious guy at the end of the bar. Some people will
ignore them, some people will pick a fight with him, some will try to call
the cops and have them escorted out. The truth of the matter, is the YC bar
will have occasional drunks, but if the bar is overtaken by local drunks, so
the YC members can not enjoy themselves any more, than it is time to try to
do something to bring some kind of order.

Since rec.boats is overloaded with drunks, what do you recommend we do?

The problem is that the OT stuff is all a one note samba.

It gets a little much after a while.

The best technique is probably to ignore the people you find truly
objectionable. Ignoring them doesn't include publishing a long list
every few days of the folks you have recently filtered, either. (see
netsock, Harry, and a few others).

A genuine jerk walks into the bar, hoping to start a fight. If he walks
around for five minutes acting like an idiot, tossing insults, etc etc
etc and nobody pays much attention- he will soon realize that he's
making a total fool of himself without achieving his desired end.

The cut 'n paste non-boat items, whether "Good News from Iraq," or
"Bush Texas Oil Cronie Indicted in Oil-For-Food Swindle" would be more
appropriate somewhere else, I agree. However, this particular bar has
earned a reputation as a good place to pick a fight.

It is amusing to observe how the reactions of various individuals to
the presence of specific OT threads will vary with the poster's
political frame of reference. We have several examples of people
yelling and screaming about conservative off-topic posts while
remaining silent or participating in the moderate or liberal
OT's.......as well as several examples of exactly the opposite.

Anybody who participates, at all, in OT threads has no moral right to
complain about others doing so. That would include our remailing
netcop, and you. Myself as well.

Gosh, we haven't had any Iraq good news in a while. I've never understood why
any good news about Iraq ****ed people off. It puts down no one, either right or
left. Yet it really seems to impact a few folks, like yourself. I don't
understand why.
