What power boat brands have great resale value?
 

I have finally decided to take the plunge and buy a used power boat up
to 31 feet. All the different brands like carver, sea ray or four
winns mean nada to me. Is there a source i can trust that tells me
how well buit and reliable a brand will be in relation to each other?
I want to buy a reliable honda or toyota NOT a lada or
chrysler.........

Are you talking about purchasing a new or used boat. I would hope used as
any new boat will depreciate a lot in this size group.
Assuming your talking about a cabin boat and not a speed boat, I would go
for the Sea Ray as the number one for resale. However, you will pay a lot
more for it up front.
Best thing to do is look for a good used one and negotiate on the price. If
you show up (very few people do in this size) you can buy it at a greatly
reduced price. Look on www.boattraderonline.com. This will give you a feel
for what they are asking. Selling price is usually a lot less in a 28 to 30
foot boat.

Good resale value is a relative term which may be difficult to quantify
accurately. Nada guides will give you an idea on resale but the best way is to
check listings for boats on yachtworld or boat trader online to see what these
boats are selling for.
Don't let yourself get stuck agonizing over resale too much. I think its
best to classify resale into groups, poor, good, excellent. You may have a
difficult time deciding that one boat in the good group has a better resale
than another in the good group and it probably doesn't matter either. My
advise is to just stay away from those that have poor resale or a history of
reliability problems.

Great tips, and many many thanks. Is there an impartial 3rd party
source of information about what existing customers feel about their
boats? JD Power and Associates rates consumers satisfaction regarding
autos, anything similar for power boats? When someone says this boat
brand is "great" or that boat brand is "bad" it's based on personal
experience but is may or may not necessarily be an overall
representative score for that particular brand.

Depends on ones point of view. I paid $77,500 for my 3055 Ciera in 1999 and was
just offered $64,000 for a trade on a 2004 Rinker. Lets see that's about 82.58%
of the original purchase price and the boat is 5 years old. Of course it might
help that the now called 305 Ciera is $99,500 new may have helped to hold the
line on the value of my boat. But who's complaining, not me.

IMHO no boat has great resale value. You lose too much by depreciation the
first year.
