Motor Overheating Ford 5.8 / Did it get dammaged.
 
?? Had a Mishaps where I ran my Boat for 8-12 Minutes at Low Speeds.
The Pump was not picking up water..... and the Temp Shot up to 240 +.
The Oil pressure was all over the place during the last minutes and
then it stalled......


After it cooled a little I was able to start it back up for a second to
verify it had not seized....


Any ideas if this would do severe dammage..

It is a 5.8 OMC in a 1995 Four Winns.. I am hoping that the computer
shut it down due to the Temp or the oil pressure Issue...


Have not solved the Pump Issue yet... Just looking for thought on Head
/ Block Dammage..

May have to do a head job. Lots of times the head warps when overheated.

Depends on how much work you do. If you Remove and Reinstall the heads, you
are looking at about $300. $225 for head resurface and valve job and $75 in
gaskets.

The most likely damage, if any, would be a warped head which should show
up in a simple compression test or, if you are daring, A constant stream
of air bubbles in the coolant or a kind of revolting milky grey emulsion
if the coolant got into the oil and the engine is run.

Badly damaged rings and or valves should also show up with a compression
test.

It's unlikely but if the seals were damaged it'll show up as oil on the
bottom front or rear, depending on which is damaged, of the engine and
higher then normal oil loss. unfortunately, unless the damage is extreme
this won't show up until the engine is run for sometime. Fortunately, as
long as you keep oil in the engine, it isn't a terminal condition.

As too the less dramatic, IE crank or piston walls scoured, it'd take a
tear down to to determine.

If you are doing it yourself a compression test won't cost more then the
price of the gauge. I have no idea what the flat rate for having it done
is but, since the test is a simple one and will reveal the existence of
any number of sins, it would be cheap insurance.

Don't forget the "start it up and listen for any clunking". A very
reliable and free test. Just be sure to shut things down fast if you do
hear any.

Take heart, odds are in your favor that nothing real bad has happened.
Most engines are remarkably resilient as long as they get shut down in a
timely manner and the fault causing the shut down is found and fixed.
