Boat Show: Yamaha is clobbering the competition
I just got back from the boat show in Boston, MA.
My best guess: 40 of 50 outboard powered boats had Yamahas on them. 6 of 50 had Johnson 3 of 50 had Suzuki 1 of 50 had Mercury. What is happening? |

What is happening? Interesting. The boat show I attended in late January in Hartford and the Worcester CEntrum Sportsman show all were Mercs and Bombardier's Johnson and Evinrude. One Yamaha dealer. At the Norwalk show last fall, it was pretty much all Merc with Yamaha/Honda third behind Bombardier Different dealers I guess. Later, Tom S. Maybe this proves Brunswick's allegation that Yamaha is now "dumping" its
engines (selling below cost) in the states to eliminate the competition. (I say this with tongue in cheek!) Maybe this big price reduction will be passed on to the consumer to offset higher gasoline prices predicted to be $2.50 - $3.00 a gallon just as boating season begins in the northeast. However, Genmar and Grady-White claim that the Yamahas are still more expensive than Mercs, Johnsons, and Suzuki. I have a feeling that re-powers are more expensive, but factory sweetheart deals for companies like Grady-White (and probably, certain brands of Genmar, though I don't know for sure), who only offer Yamaha, make initial purchases competitive. Once they develop brand loyalty, they'll stick it to you.... at least that is the conclusion I can too at re-power time. Maybe its just me, but had more trouble dealing with a Yamaha service rep (about five years ago) than I ever did with Merc or Bombadier. Totally turned me off of Yamaha it was that unpleasant. Dealers get money from Yamaha for having Yamaha motors on boats at boatshow? You know, co-op advertising type dollars. That would be my guess. Or the boat brands owned by Yamaha were the big exhibitors. That is my other guess. del cecchi |

Definatly the 4 strokes!
Got a 50 hp 4 stroke with about 2500 hours on it, running pretty much full throttle 50% of the trips, usually with a load of 6 to 7 persons on board. Been great! Exelent in fact, never went in the shop once in all that running. |

OK I'd have to tweak the numbers a little. Maybe Honda was 4 of 50, although
I didn't see any 225 hp ones. "Don White" wrote in message ... What happened to the Hondas'?? Jim and Becky wrote in message ... I just got back from the boat show in Boston, MA.
