Yes, Senator Byrd has made a public apology for being to the KKK. Don't you
listen or read any news? Here is Senator Byrd's interview with Bernie Shaw
on CNN:

The answer is yes I do know the difference between was and is. I never used
the word "is" but I did use the word "was".

Byrd was a member of the KKK, and actively recruited for the KKK.
Byrd was a "Kleagle" -- an official recruiter who signed up members for $10
a head. He said he joined because it "offered excitement" and because the
Klan was an "effective force" in "promoting traditional American values."
