four stroke on side

I'm interested in the new Merc 9.9 four stroke at 84# for my dinghy.
They are supposed to lie on one side or vertical so all the oil doesn't
run out. My dinghy is stored on Weaver snap davits so it is rotated up
90 degrees out of the water when travelling. If I leave the outboard on
the dinghy it will rotate up onto the side it is supposed to be stored
on. Neat.

So what happens if I run into a few waves and the boat (36' trawler)
bounces around a bit, roll, pitch or yaw? Will oil run out? Or should I
just stick with a two stroke.

I could get that Weaver thing that pivots the motor vertical when you
crank up the dinghy, but it costs too much and it is UGLY.

I would think that a motor stored in the horizontal position off your
inflatable (in the vertical position) would be ugly.

Why not buy a swivel bracket to mount on the inflatable transom that would
allow you to store the motor and inflatable in the vertical position off the
swim platform?

No one ever said boating is cheap. ;-)

I don't think "leaking" is the problem. Inside the engine, if you tip it
up so the oil sits atop the piston, the only thing that keeps the oil from
draining INTO the combustion chamber is the rings, which do not seal
completely in any engine. They're not made to prevent oil flow past them
for weeks, just milliseconds.

What do you suppose would happen if oil leaked from under the piston to
fill or partially fill the combustion chamber when the engine was started?
(Flashback to watching deck crews manually pulling props slowly on WW2
carriers when airplanes had radial engines with pistons pointing down to
purge them of oil before cranking the engines.)

Unfortunately, these cheap engines don't have DRY SUMPS like an old
Harley....Storing oil in the crankcase was ok until someone turned it OVER!

Get a two stroke.

Hey, thanks! I love to learn stuff about engines.

I bought the very engine your describing and i love it. It is quiet and has
not leaked anything yet, of course when I lay it down I do make sure it
rests on the tiller side. I would recommend this one!

I had three of these mounted on a 14' Jon boat. It was fun to let the
grandkids play with.
