how many rod holders 8'6 beam

Hello,

Just about to put some rod holders into my starcraft islander but
scratching my head on how many to put on the rear. Im thinking 3 rods
pointed to the rear and 2 on the ends pointing outwards. This too much
or maybe I can do 6 on the rear?

Heres what I mean if you can make out the ascii...The "o" are the rod
holders and the lines sticking out represent rods....

For just holding the rods, fine.

If you are planning on trolling, then it's also fine, but you need to
spread the rod spacing a little - use only two, max three rods. In
most situations you are not going to be trolling your wake for fish so
figure on two.

If it were me, I would just use four - two in the stern and two
outboard. You really aren't going to use more than two at a time a on
a boat like the Islander anyway.

I would angle the two stern holders out of the wake and purchase a
couple of these

http://tinyurl.com/2gfw3

for the outboard facing rods. I have these on my Ranger and they work
great, but you have to be carefull when removing the rods from the
holder - you can lose a holder. What I did was drill two holes, on in
the holder and one in the bracket and secured them with stainless wire
and a interlock clip. Haven't lost one yet.

Just out of curiosity, the Islander has two storage/live wells in the
stern if I remember correctly - where would you place the rod holders?

Where are you located/what type of fishing are you talking about? Great
Lakes salmon? Walleye? Sal****er Kingfish? Big Game fish?

I run nine rods off an 8n foot beam Slickcraft 23 footer for Salmon/trout on
Lake Michigan. Two downriggers straight back off the corners, tow on the
side gunnels, two dipseys off the gunnels behind the riggers and two more
dipseys off outriggers with the rods set behind the gunnel dipseys and a
"pump handle" 1 pound ball rig down the center between the two straight back
downriggers. have to spare/open rod holders to move rods to bring in a fish
but as long as we keep moving no problem with tangles. Fred

Nine rods? Never mind fighting tangles, how do you manage to keep the
lures from catching each other that close together?

I've seen arrays like that; too much like work for me to enjoy.

Typically, I'll troll with two rods and use another for sight-fishing or
to free line, and I'll use two rods when bottom fishing or drift fishing.

Set the riggers at different depths and the dipseys at different lengths.
Just DON'T make sharp turns. Principle is to set lures in a U shape
vertically with deepest in the center and a U shape horizontally with those
in the center closest to the boat. 100s if not 1000s rigged this way on the
Great Lakes. We are allowed three lures= rods in the water for each fishing
license on board and so if we run 9 rods then we have the manpower plus the
autopilot to do it. Fred

Makes sense. The max I ever run at one time on the Ranger is four.
Then again, I'm usually inshore in shallow water so the column I'm
fishing in narrows the technique choices. I also cast a lot from the
Ranger, so the trolling thing is more to find the fish.

The Contender is a different story altogether - different technology
for different kinds of fish.

Thanks for the info.

Well, Fred - it would appear that I've been lost in space for a while.

I received this weeks issue of "The Fisherman" and right there, on
page 15 is a picture of what appears to be a 18 foot Grumman set up
with 12 rod holders, two downriggers and each downrigger set up for
two rods. How the hell you can keep track of all that, I haven't a
clue.. :)

Who 'da thunk it? Ain't never seen such. :)
