Yo- Mercury Outboard types...

Somebody just gave me, less than ten minutes ago, a 65 horsepower
blueband Mercury outboard. Seems it's in ok condition - a good
candidate for restoration maybe.

As I don't know a lot about these engines, is there anything I should
be looking for? Parts availability? Restorable or just more junk for
the metal bin at the dump?

I haven't checked it out yet, but the motor turns over, one cylinder
seems very weak, acceptable on the others - spark is present - perhaps
a worn cylinder, busted ring - anything I should look for when I tear
it down?

Assuming that it's not rebuildable, can these parts be sold off to
restorers?

Help a brother out? :)

Later,

Tom

Is the motor a three cyl or four cyl? They made both, the three being the
latter.

I'm guessing here - maybe it's you? :)

Email me off line at info -AT- swsports.org just so that I don't
forget the number.

I'm sure I'll be picking your brains on this one.

Thanks man, appreciate it.

The three cyl had a thermostat sticking problem. It would stick in an almost
closed position. When the motor was used in this condition it would cause
enough heat in the top cyl. to burn a nice size hole from the combustion
chamber into the water jacket. Taking the thermostat out before meltdown
never seemed to cause any problems.

Ya - pulling the termostat is an SOP.

I had two of these on my Sunfish when I was a child.
