MerCrusier 3.0 Power Trim Switch Question?

I am buying a 2001 Bayliner Classic Capri 1950 with the Merc 3.0 engine. I
noticed that lowering the propeller that it went down but would not return
to the up position without useing the trailer switch. I am not sure how it
is supposed to work. We probably did not lower the propeller all the way
down because when we noticed the up button didn't work we didn't go any
lower. Does the propeller need to be in the lowest position before the up
part of the switch works or is the swith bad. If it is bad is it expensive
to fix or is it a do it yourself job? I am picking the boat up in a day or
so.

The down button will lower the outdrive from full up to all the way down.
The up button will raise the outdrive from all the way down to approx 1/2
way.
To get the outdrive above this position you have to use the trailer switch.
This is a safety device to keep from tearing up the gimbal by running the
outdrive at too high an angle.
If it does not work chances are it is just the switch on the control as
everything else is the same in terms of operation of trim pump, relays,
etc...
Switch is fairly easy to replace - just be careful and the wires are
soldered (at least the ones I have ever pulled out).

I bought two of these for my brother for his birthday last year. He
loves it.
