I'm not familiar with A.O.Hell. Are you using AOL software to read
the newsgroup?

Hi Ed

I'm pretty new with the group myself and unfortunately have had to make
extensive use of my filters also.

I'm sure that your e=mail program has some form of filters but I've
taken to using Gravity, it's free ware, which you can get at.

http://cws.internet.com/file/11436.htm

If the link doesn't work do a search on gravity news reader.

Unlike some groups I belong too where blocking certain posters loses you
nothing in regards to content this tends to run counter to the trend.

For some reason several of the posters that seem to have the most to add
in the way of boating content also feel that, somehow, that also gives
them a licence to act like they are emotional twelve year olds out on
the playground.

It really puzzles me sometimes how supposably mature people who appear
to be able to add so much on a subject seem content to carry on in such
a way that they just about force anyone who wants to carry on a
meaningful discussion on the subject at hand to write them off as
ignorant, self centered louts.

Ed,

Welcome to rec.boats. There are a lot of knowledgeable people
here that will help you with boating related questions. So please
don't let all the bickering and such drive you away.

As for AOL and news groups. I'd get off AOL if you can. But
even if you stay with AOL I'd use something else to read
the groops. You can sign up for a free "usenet" accout at
www.individual.net.

Then you can use a REAL newsreader to get groops like this one.
It's SO much better then getting the groups via email or using AOLs
junky news reader. (AOLs news reader is soon to be discontinued
anyway.)

If you want / need help setting up the Individual.net account
and / or need help finding a free newsreader - send me an email
and I'll help you.

Personally, I use Microsoft Outlook Express. It's probably on your
computer already. And while some people hate it and anything that
is Microsoft - it really isn't that bad.

There are, I believe, other free news-readers - maybe others here
can share what free (or inexpensive) news readers there are.

Yet another way to read these groups is to use Google's
page. Personally, I don't much like Google's reader, but you might.
Try this:
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&group=rec.boats

Hope that helps,
Gary

PS: Post what type of boat you have, what part of
the country you are in, and some questions of boat
thoughts...

Tons - probably the best, to a newbie, is Thunderbird from Mozilla.
It's open source and is fairly easy to set up.

I normally use Agent for newsgroup stuff. It's a little more
sophisticated than Thunderbird, but again, T-Bird is fairly friendly
and going into it without previously using something different, it
will be easy to set up.

I've heard that AOL is giving up on newsgroups, but that appears to be
a rumor or out right BS. I don't know - I don't use AOL.

Tom

As far as I know, you can't forward your AOL mail, but you can now check
it directly through OE. These articles will tell you how to do it:

Yup,, I used to own a 81 Bayliner with pine stringers once,, yup,, as a
matter of fact,, I liked it so much that I bought the company,, of course it
went bankrupt shortly after I was the president but that is typical with all
the firms I buy.

But if you need another few 81 bayliners for parts, I have a fleet of them I
will sell you. Let me check my inventory cards to see what I have.

You're going to do well in here, Ed.
I suggest a 1981 Bayliner with pine stringers.
