Help! Corrosion in my outboard.

I have a recurring problem in my 15hp kicker that I use as an aux
engine. I operate in salt water and corrosion in the aluminum block
builds up to the point that it causes blockage in the cooling system.
I can clean it and flush it out with vinegar and the problem is solved
temporarily, but a month or so later, the problem is back. I don't
have easy access to fresh water to flush the engine after each use and
the zink appears to be in good shape.

I've been tempted to strip down the engine and coat the cooling
channels with zink chromate paint, but am not sure that I can get a
good enough bond to the aluminum to prevent peeling and an even worse
problem.

Has anyone found a solution to this?

I use Salt-Away and am very happy with this product. Both my 9.9 kicker and
my 225 hp outboards are in salt water 99% of the time. I have seen several
people use vinegar and/or Salt Away, at the end of the rinsing of the engine
their is little or no vinegar in the flushing fluid. Per Salt Away, "For
all applications, do not rinse Salt-Away out of the engine with water".
When I turn off the water their is strong solution of Salt Away left in the
motor. No problems now for 15 + years. Hope this helps.... Jim

Thanks for the quick feedback. Is it available in the USA? I checked
their website and they do not sell directly outside NZ nor do they show
any USA dealers.

I see Nuetra-Salt in the Boaters World catalog, probably close to Salt-Away.
In the Bass Pro Shop Marine catalog they have Salt Terminator. They all
probably work about the same. Pick any major boating catalog and they will
have probably something very similar to Salt-Away. It runs around $25.00 a
gallon and last a long time.

I've seen the salt a way mentioned before, always favorably and since my
boat is also in the water most of the season with no opportunity to
flush I've been wondering both where to get it, you've answer that, and
how the heck to you get the stuff into the engine?

Thanks

I would check the thermostat. Too hot and the salts precipitate out. Most
run less than 160 degrees F in sal****er.

You could make your own gallon for about
80-cents. It's de-ionized water, and vinegar.
