Marine Starter Question

In a Delco 10-MT starter typically used on GM engine powered craft,
there is a baffle plate crammed inside the "nose" housing that the
drive clutch "bendix" sits behind. It has a rubber gasket that seals
off the motor area that will keep any electrical sparks from
discharging any gas fumes that may be in the bell housing.

prestolite starters use a center bering housing which seals off the
motor as well as provides a center support bushing for the motor.

Various manufactureres used various starter brands and configurations
for their engines and/or transmissions.

i wouldn't advise using an automotive starter unless one first
transfers over the baffles and gaskets.

From my experience, the startes give little trouble, but will collect

moisture in the brush areacausing the brush springs to rust in two or
the holders to stick... Usually not requiring to purchase another
starter.

actually a simple repair.
