Hydrofoil mounting??
Just picked up a hydrofoil for the boat. Directions say to mount it as far
to the rear as possible on the cavitation plate. That would put it right over, and mostly behind the prop. Does anyone have one of these mounted on an alpha 1 drive? Any tips? Does anyone see a problem with mounting it that far back? Thanks, Rich |
That is the correct location. As far back on the cavitation plate as
possible. This means make sure your holes are a couple inches from the rear or more (you don't want to break the cavitation plate off due to the holes being too close to the rear). Do yourself a big favor and take it back and get your money back. Invest in
a set of smart tabs. Yes they are considerably more but you won't regret it. I think I would try the foil first and see if it does not do what Rich is
looking for before spending $189.99 on the smart tabs. Problem w/ smart tabs is they create a certain amount of drag and bow down all the time. Speed will overcome it but there is always that push no matter what the trim angle of the motor is. The foil is adjusted by way of the trim angle of the drive. He could buy either of the two hydrofoils I have in the garage for ten
bucks, plus shipping. Both were taken off so I could mount Smart Tabs... Tabs work. Took the boat out today to test and see if the hydrofoil makes any
difference. It is a new Tiger Shark VG Hydrofoil. Water conditions were flat calm, very little wind. Boat was loaded with full fuel and two adults, 475# total. Without the hydrofoil full throttle at 4400 rpms made 51 mph. With the hydrofoil full throttle at 4400 rpms was 50 mph. Cruising at 3200 rpms made 39 mph with or without the hydrofoil installed, no difference at all. With hydrofoil it did pop up on plane noticeably quicker and would stay on plane at 2000 rpms. Without at 2000 rpms it would still plow with the bow way high. All considered I will keep it. It probably won't give me any better fuel economy unless it would improve if I cruised at lower rpms. Wait a minute...Regarding that last paragraph...won't being able to plane at lower speeds give you better fuel economy when you are driving in this range? If you always drive at full spedd then there may be little difference, but being able to plane at lower speeds gives you better fuel economy at this speed. |
