Tried to launch my boat today, launch ramps CLOSED!
The cop sitting by the closed sign told me that it was closed because of
the orange terror alert. Anyone know anything about this? Is this what we can expect from now on? Attention terrorists, plan ahead, don't wait to launch your boat on the day you attack. Put it in the day before. Geezus, stupid government thinking. Jim |

Where?
The Coast Guard Pier launch ramp in Monterey was open today. The name is appropriate -- the CG ties up to the breakwater next to it, and CG Station Monterey is about a block away. -- Chuck Tribolet http://www.almaden.ibm.com/cs/people/triblet Silicon Valley: STILL the best day job in the world. I tried two ramps, the launch ramp at Cabrillo Beach, Los Angeles
Harbour, and Long Beach Harbour. Both closed. Maybe this was some local thing. Jim Chuck Tribolet wrote: Where? The Coast Guard Pier launch ramp in Monterey was open today. The name is appropriate -- the CG ties up to the breakwater next to it, and CG Station Monterey is about a block away. |

Do they normally have a cop stationed at these ramps?
If so, they could be closed for Orange Alert because the cop was needed elsewhere, not because they thought the terrorists were gonig to try to escape in a Boston Whaler. |

Actually, since they had a cop sitting by the sign, the ramps would need to
have multiple cops on an ordinary day for the possibility I just advanced, |

Here in Rochester, my local ramp was open the weekend before last, and there were probably 75 boats anchored, fishing for perch. The docks had been removed, but with two people, launching wasn't a problem. But, I saw something I'd never seen before at this location: There were two CG guys walking back and forth constantly between the jetty which protects the channel into Lake Ontario, the the launch site, which is directly adjacent. At first, I thought they were checking safety equipment, or doing the DEC a favor and looking at fishing licenses. But, they didn't pause long enough to check equipment as each boat came in. Then it dawned on me: It was a gorgeous day and the lake was flat as glass. It would've been a breeze to bring a small boat across from Canada. I think we can expect all sorts of strange stuff for quite some time. |

I fish Narragansett Bay and environs a lot and there have been some restrictions put in place around the Bridges like you can't fish within 500 feet of the bridge and a couple of others like you can't fish from shore around the bridges which make no sense at all. The fishing clubs were told that the DPU in RI was given a directive from the Dept. of Homeland Security and they couldn't do anything about it because it involved funding of some sort. Of course, after all this came out, just to test the system, I anchored directly under the Pell (Jamestown) Bridge and fished for black fish for about four hours, was passed by two Coasties in high speed partol boats and a 100 foot cutter and nobody said nuttin'. :) And yes, I was monitoring 9/16 and the local working frequency, 13. I found out why..., launch ramps CLOSED!
I asked a friend who runs a launch facility in another town.
Los Angeles Harbour had a "specific threat", and so, decided to close the launch facilities. With the few people using them, I would rather have seen them use the manpower to observe and capture one of these "evil doers". How did closing a couple of launch ramps that would have had a dozen uses, at the most, help make us safer? One guy looking closely at the boats might have caught someone, and maybe LEARNED something. Something that might have helped make us safer. It turns out that Howard Dean is right, you know. Exactly... "from who"? You should count your blessings every day we
are here to protect those who cannot or will not protect themselves. Uhhh, that would include you. A man went to the public swimming pool. Before he could go swimming, he was fingerprinted and required to fill out a registration card. When he asked why, he was told "So we know who you are and where to send the body if you get eaten by any of the sharks in the pool" The swimmer was perturbed, but proceeded to the locker room to change into his trunks. In the locker room, he was charged $175 to rent a locker. When he protested the amount of the fee, he was told that the money was needed to hire the guards required to keep sharks out of the pool. $175 lighter, the swimmer proceeded to the pool only to discover that it was only half-filled with water. It was difficult to get into the pool due to the phalanx of armed guards surrounding it. He was told the shallow fill was to make it easier to spot sharks, and that all the guards were necessary to shoot at any sharks that might appear. The swimmer was finally annoyed. "This is the damn City Park Swimming Pool! There are *no* sharks in here!" "Yes sir, merely additional proof that all of our anti-shark measures are working. Oh, it's going to cost you another $175 to get your stuff *out* of the locker. We're sure you'll understand." On the way back to the locker room, the hapless swimmer was bitten by a rattlesnake hiding in the corner. Everybody was looking for sharks- nobody thought to look for snakes. |

Do you suppose the terrorists just get in line at the border crossings? Our border with Canada is too long to partrol, and much of it is mountainous wilderness. It isn't like trying to defend the perimeter of Vatican City. Heck, I could sneak into Canada. And back. Think what a terrorist with just a minimum amount of training could do? You want to enter the US from Canada? Come by pleasure boat during the busy summer cruise season and put up a courtesy flag. It would take US Customs days, if ever, to figure out you hadn't cleared customs. Stay out of the resort marinas and odds are good you would *never* be questioned. As it is, only a small percentage of boats are actually inspected when they do report to customs. A guy could have a dozen terrorist criminal *******s concealed in a medium size boat and have a 60-80 percent chance of getting through untouched. Terrorist criminal *******s will take the easiest opportunity to get into the US. It's like basketball. You double or triple team the guy you think is most likely to score against you, and that only takes the pressure off somebody else instead. |

A single, tragic incident in the entire history of the fictional little town. The city fathers used the incident as an excuse to extend police powers into all sorts of areas not particularly related to securing the pool. The city government bloated to unheard of proportions, and the shark attack was cited as the reason. The little city even began annexing a number of other communities so that the other areas could be more effectively policed. In the end, somebody threw a rattlesnake instead of a shark. There well may be additional attacks. It is the nature of terrorists to strike where they are unexpected- to cut people down during innocent, routine, daily activities. Until we become a total police state, with everybody watched absolutely all the time, we remain vulnerable to attacks from quarters we would currently consider low risk. When we do become a total police state, the terrorists will have carried the day- they will have caused America, as we know it, to self-destruct. If and when the criminal *******s stirke again, it will be where we least expect it- not where we are most prepared. Unless, of course, the preparations are ineffective window dressing. The only thing more frightening than being attacked from somewhere you didn't expect it would be a highly successsful attack through the one or two areas where the public had been lulled into believing we were well prepared. |

Chuck,
I'd agree with you that putting up a wall around America, instituting an Alert System, passing the Patriot Act, fingerprinting all non-Citizens, etc. would be a waste of time...*IF* we didn't also have a policy of going into the countries in the Middle East and tossing out the governments that support the terrorists. If and when the criminal *******s stirke again, it will be where we least expect it- not where we are most prepared. Unless, of course, the preparations are ineffective window dressing. The only thing more frightening than being attacked from somewhere you didn't expect it would be a highly successsful attack through the one or two areas where the public had been lulled into believing we were well prepared. |

link.net... Chuck, I'd agree with you that putting up a wall around America, instituting an Alert System, passing the Patriot Act, fingerprinting all non-Citizens, etc. would be a waste of time...*IF* we didn't also have a policy of going into the countries in the Middle East and tossing out the governments that support the terrorists. That plan works for me. What is *your* plan? What would you propose we do about Islamic terrorists who were born in and resided continuously in places like England, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Colombia, the Phillippines, Indonesia, Chechnya, Jersey City, Cinncinnati, Buffalo, Boca Raton, Bluefield (WV) and Old Forge (NY)? Make sure you have just one answer which applies equally to all the places listed. This way, the places that have no value to you are treated the same as Boca. We wouldn't want our "little brown brothers" to be mistreated just because you say so. (That was Teddy Roosevelt's term for the Phillippinos). |

Ya know, I hear this kind of crap all day from the likes of you, Gould, Harry, and the rest, can you please elaborate on this one statement, and please give some examples, proof, or is is just more of your endless political rubbish? Good grief...have you been having sex with Wally? -- Email sent to is never read. |
