Nice day at Sanibel Island
 

I had plans to do some chores here at the new house today but it was
bright and sunny this morning with temperatures headed for the low
80s. When my neighbor asked me if I wanted to go fishing that was all
I needed to hear and it was off to Walmart for a Florida salt water
fishing license, and then down to the bait shop for 4 dozen live
shrimp. We fished the south end of Sanibel Island near the Point Ybel
lighthouse for about 3 hours. The beaches were crowded with good
looking sun chasers and the pelicans were active, but the fish were
not. My neighbor caught one keeper mackrel and we caught dozens of
small stuff, mostly baby grouper, but nothing worth mentioning.

It sure was a heck of a nice day on the water however.

We've had almost perfect weather the last few days. I landed a 5 foot
blacktip about 8 miles SW of there just yesterday. Water clarity is great,
too. I could see him 15 feet below the surface and almost the entire 40
minutes while I was fighting him.

too. I could see him 15 feet below the surface

Water has been great. I got over 2.5 meters with my Secci inside big Carlos
pass yesterday. (it was on the bottom) I am seeing 1.5-2m all over the bay.
The flow in the rivers is way down so we are getting more clear gulf water in
the bay. Salinity is cruising in the high 30s all over the bay. Typically it
will be below 16 in any of the channels from the rivers and creeks.
Good dissolved oxygen too. (5-6)
Fishing should be better ;-)

Buzz across the pass to Estero Island (Ft Myers Beach) and catch a beer at the
Lani Kai (big green hotel). There will be a bunch of boats anchored near the
beach. That is where the babes are. Sanibel tends to pull in an older crowd.

I will be sure to check it out next time I nose the bow into the gulf. I
lived in St. Pete for many years (still have office there), but, now
live in Jacksonville. Lots of cuties here too. My pap once said, "The
closer the water the prettier the women." The old man was rarely wrong.

Nice fish. What kind of bait and tackle were you using?


A squirrelfish (about 9 inches long) on a 2 1/2 oz. lead-head jig, 4 feet of
100 lb mono, and 50lb Powerpro on an Okuma 65 spinning reel. The bait was
intended for a gag grouper (thus the mono leader)...but beggars can't be
choosers. The leader broke as soon as I got a gaff in his tail.
