Just how bad are these units, I have seen some great used boat prices that
have these on them, are they totally worthless or serviceable until repower
money comes along?

No, the OMC electric shift drives are a pain in the ass. There is a clutch
coil down in the lower end that will fail in the most unusual time, once a
year perhaps, and that gear ball knuckle transmission piece will wear out
also, annually. Stay away from that unit if you can, unless it is given to
you.

Depends on the condition. I just rebuilt one using a spare drive last
summer and it works great. The electric shift is a little strange to
deal with, but it is works, they are fine.

I would look for an adapter kit and find a Merc outdrive however for
replacement at some point.

I'm not sure I was clear, these are the units that have what looks like an
outboard motor on a bracket. Do those have electric shift?

No The Sea Drives don't have electric shift. They do have problems, one of
which is ingestion of sea water mist while running.......not good for the
little needle bearing inside the powerhead.
I have seen some rigged with the air intake inside of the boat, which helps.
Unless you can buy the rig extremely cheap, it's best to stay away from
them.

other answers were for a stringer mount stern drive not a Sea Drive.

The Sea Drive was actually the forerunner of bracket mount outboards. It was a
great idea but the execution was poor. If a solid hull with a Sea Drive can be
found for the right price, it makes an excellent candidate for a bracket mounted
outboard conversion since the Sea Drive required a closed transom.
