One last time ...

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall ....

..... she lived in Naples, Italy.

You've got that wrong.

What the man from Nantucket said was just a bit more crass than "never mind".

ROTFL!!!!

Good point. :)

I don't know that one.

I know this one:

There once was a man from Nantucket,
Who was poaching fish near Pawtucket,
He found himself wishing,
to spend his life fishing,
And wound up in his minnow bucket.

Or this one:

There once was a man from Nantucket,
Who kept all of his cash in a bucket,
But his daughter, named Nan,
Ran away with a man,
And as for the bucket, Nantookit.

Later,

Tom

I was in the Navy in the late 70's on a frigate and we visited Naples
frequently. I remember Humpty on the wall leading up to the Nato (IIRC)
base. She was there for all 5 Med cruises I made.
Remember the "Bennies" by the castle?

She has become a bit of a world celebrity. I was there for a couple of
years in '69 and '70 and she had been there for quite a while before that
time. I recently found a picture of her on the web -- apparently she
continued in business at the same location until well into the 80's.

I don't remember "Bennies". My ship was homeported in Naples harbor, so
when I got off duty, I beat feet up to our apartment behind the AFSouth
communications station (near the hospital).

I do remember all the campfire girls though.

"Bennies" were the transvestite hookers that would prey on the newbie
sailors as a cheap "date". And, no, I didn't participate. They looked
good from a distance though. They must have come (pun intended) later
than your tour.

There were a lot of the campfire girls across the road from the Humpty
wall.

BTW, Humpty was a dumpy old woman when I saw her. I never saw her
talking with a "customer".

Naples was a good port for a frigate. We tied up to the outer seawall,
had a "hamburger" from a hot dog style cart and cheap cabs were waiting
for the long trek around the seawall to the port center.

I always had a good time in Naples. Took a 3 day tour to Rome for 40
bucks, including bus ride, hotel and 2 (huge) meals/day. Visited Pompei
and took the Hydrofoil to Capri.

Spent plenty on beer in the "gut".

Oh yea, I was working on the radar one day in port and an Italian tug
was attempting to take the anchor off of an Italian frigate for
maintenance when it let loose and hit the tug from about 10 feet up and
sank the tug. I only saw the aftermath.
Brings lots of other similar memories as I'm sure you have.

They were there in early and mid 1980s. I had a few run-ins with them
while trying to deal with Naples traffic and once on Shore Patrol duty.

What ship were you on? I visited Naples in a frigate and a DDG, and was
assigned there TDY briefly waiting on a court-martial case; they
assigned me as a driver (boy that really made clear what a different
world it is).

Remember the phrase "Me Johnny Questo, Riccione?"
Buy anything off the hey-joes?
