Harry, if you would have won the war of 1812, Canada would be part of the
United States of America. ( did you forget that small detail.)

The war was a stalemate. Good thing for Canada...were it part of the
USA, it would be going down the crapper right now, too.

The economy is *booming* in most Canadian provinces. Look at their buck, it's
pulling up to within sight of the almighty Yankee dollar. And it has been the
Loonie coming up, (as much as the dollar going into the dumper because of our
hare-brained management of the federal budget, deficit, and general economy)
that is accounting for the dramatically narrower gap in the currencies.

Gotta watch out for them "socialists", eh?
(insert grin here) They're currently doing very, very well.

You can't win. Now the film production people are crying because work is
dropping off. One big advantage was our weak loonie. Now that it's up to 85
cents and 'Arnold' is working on the film companies in California to stay
home, things are changing. Biggest loosers are Toronto, Montreal & Vancouver
probably followed by Halifax. A neighbour of mine has had steady work
producing CBS 'made for tv' movies the last few years.

You are certainly correct on this one Harry. The United States Army got
their butts kicked when they tried to take Canada.
With the help of British Regular Soldiers, the Canadian Militia and our
Indian allies soundly defeated the invaders from the south.

Mr. Madison's war would have been lost but for the fact that at the same
time the Brits were fighting us, Napolean was giving them real problems
in Europe and on the high seas. Thus, the Brits were not able to
concentrate their forces on us. Even so, they won most of the early
battles, and chased us out of Washington, D.C. for a while. By the time
the Brits defeated Napolean, we had regained some ground a,d it was
bascially too late for the Brits to rally and run us down. There also
was Jackson's successful defense of New Orleans, which, interestingly,
took place AFTER the war of 1812 was over and a treat at Ghent was
reached.

Most historians believe that if the Brits were not tied up in a second
front, they would have wiped us entirely. That second front was
with...the French.

Under than logic, we might as well thank Russia for helping us during
the war of 1812 because they sucker punched Napoleon.

The simple fact is we should thank the British for helping us win the
War of 1812 because they were stupid and arrogant enough to enter into
a two front war which they couldn't win without OUR help in food and
other merchant supplies.

The French "helped" only by being dumbasses themselves.

The French demanded that all government offices be bilingual and all road
signs,, yet their province is all french and they do not observe the
bilingual practice,,, while visiting quebec, it is a well known fact that if
you only speak english, you will most noticeably be treated rude and
improperly,,,

I could go on but I don't feel like a rant at the moment,,, let someone
else pick it up from here,,,,

When my daughter was getting her masters at McGill (in Montreal), there was a
law on the books that required all salespeople to greet all customers in
French. After the greeting, the salesperson could switch to English (or some
other language) if the customer was unable to speak or uncomfortable conducting
business in French.

It was also illegal to conduct business in English if the customer preferred to
speak French.

Pretty sneaky technique to assure that the
Francophones had an advantage over Anglophones when interviewing for jobs as
department store clerks.

Based solely upon drive-by comparisons of
some "French" residential neighborhoods and some "English" neighborhoods, I
developed an impression that at least historically the Anglophonic have
dominated the economic and social framework in Montreal, while the Francophonic
have been runner's-up.

It does make for some interesting culture, despite the turf war tensions. I've
been to places I could not live under any circumstance, but I could get along
comfortably in Montreal.

Montreal has always been a favourite place to visit by the locals down here.
Much more cosmopolitan than the rest of Quebec.
I drove to a smaller sized French city half way between Quebec City and
Montreal to buy my Sandpiper 565 sailboat in May. Although very French,
everyone I ran into was very polite and helpful. It made me wish I could
speak more than a dozen French words.

My wife's best friend's husband was posted to the Paris Embassy about 23

They chose McD's. The bill for the meal was about $50. This is when you
could probably eat at the top Paris restaurants for not much more.

Hi John: Just one! At that time, when I was in Paris, my Granddaughter was

Most of the smaller, family type restaurants in Europe, do not charge for

Perhaps we could have done that. I don't know if they'd feed four kids
for free, when only three adults are paying. These kids were between 7
and 12 (not ten as I said earlier). Plus, as a newbie to Paris I
didn't have your knowledge.

I spent four and a half years in Stuttgart, and I don't recall ever
getting a free meal for my kid. Most of the time, if we ate out, we
ate at the small, family owned places. Never got free meals though.

Italian toilet seat discussion continued:

I think one would expect to find toilet seats in the Americanized hotels like
Holiday Inn, etc.

We try to stay at 2-3 star places to save some money, and get a more local
experience. Our local experience in Rome included a prowler in the hotel room
in the middle of the night, probably trying to steal
American passports, so it wasn't exactly a
premiere address. (Wife woke up, screamed, and by the time I got out of bed a
split second later the person was out the door and running down the hall like a
rabbit, empty handed).

The reason I can be completely sure we had a toilet seat is that we stayed in
that room, even after the break in, for over a week. My wife is a real trooper,
but our tenure in a room with no seat on the toilet would have been about 15
minutes, max.
Midnight prowlers she'll put up with, but no toilet seat? Out of the question.

ROTFLMAO!!!!

How the hell did this go from France to Italian toilets?

LOL!!!

It's Europe. And France has similar toilet conditions. Except for the
public self cleaning, cost money variety.

Free, clean restroom. Europe may be high on your list, but

toilets in
Europe leave a lot to be desired! snip

Try Korean toilets for a real treat!

My experience in Korea was similar to Thailand and Saudi. Public
toilets were ... well ... about as bad as some here in the states.
Particularly fun in the evening as many had no lighting inside... don't
slip. :o

We went on a local holiday train ride over the weekend and rode in a
passenger car that was probably 50 or 60 years old. No restroom. I
was telling my b.i.l that it reminded of the train I took from Korat to
Bangkok in 1994 - only that train had restrooms. Of course if you
looked into the bowl, you saw the ties passing below.

Be very happy that there was no toilet. I made the mistake of entering
a toilet on a bus. The normal Korean toilet is a hole in the floor, so
the people are used to squatting - not sitting on the seat. Well, in
the bus they climbed up on the toilet and squatted. Many had very poor
aim. Enough said. (Probably way too much!)
