Default whats needed for this boat

My mother has decided my dad needs a boat and of all things she placed a bit
on ebay for one.

She knows nothing about boats, and although my dad is a boat builder by
trade its going to be a surprize.

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....e=STRK:MEWA:IT

I dont know anything about boats my self, what would be needed to get this
going.

I live on the other side of the country to them so i cant go and view it.

A boat builder by trade??
He might be a bit more critical than your average newby. I think I'd let him
see it first before I put Australian..or for that matter, 'real money' down.

*** besides...you have a National Resourse in the person of Karen Smith in
your country. He/she knows more than there is to know about anything
nautical. Just ask her :-)

It will need to be rigged with an outboard and controller for the outboard.
And prolly some steering work to adapt steering to the outboard as well as a
battery and whatever electrics are needed to wire the outboard to the boat.

In other words. It needs to have an outboard properly rigged is all.

Looking at that boat I think 25hp would be very dissapointing and struggle
to get that on plane with 2 people aboard. I'd *highly* reccomend one of
those little 4 cylinder Merc 2-strokes (45-50hp) that are all over the place
at a good price. Anything from 1960-1990 works about the same in this regard
so long as a good shop gives it the proper PM work.

Unreccomended are those ugly little Jonnyrudes of the same vintage.

looks to me like you will need...a safety kit , w/horn, flares, emerg
stuff....., a two way radio, some fishing gear, and maybe a hand heled
gps unit...get it out and run it, that will reveal other stuff as
well...not a bad boat for the $$...imho...

Ever have anything nice to say about the members here Don?

MadBiker...did your mom win the auction? If so, what will your Dad be using
the boat for? Looks like the next purchase is an outboard motor for it.

For about E1.98 in real money (Euros), you could buy Smith's clapped-out
old cabin cruiser with the rusty diesel outboard mounted on the homemade
stern bracket. In US money, that would be what, $100? And that includes
all the empty glass bottles.

Ahhh I do love the smell of fresh on topic threads in the morning:-)

Sorry mad biker, this is probably a bit late:-) but mostly getting a
"good" second hand OB with all the controls fitting etc is worth more
than an older hull & certainly more problematic.

Lots of people buy older boats out of the trading post etc cheap
because the owners just want them out of the yard, then resell just the
motor & trappings. They usually get lots more than they paid for the
complete jigger.

Sure do!
example.. Karen Smith does not live in Cleveland, Ohio.
(doesn't get more complimentary then that)

That's about $590USD so if it floats, and the trailer looks as good as in the
photos, it's probably not a bad deal to start with. 1500+ miles is a long way
to go to pick it up so you might look closer to home.

I would lose those seats and get something with a bit of a cushion. 25hp max is
not going to allow any skiing! I'm surprised it can't take more. Might be a
warning sign in itself.

Did she win the auction? It was closed when I viewed it.
