Movie does not do it justice. I fired an expired one on a training
exercise. Talk about bright! Makes the CG approved stuff look like a
joke.

Absolutely! I tried one of the small handheld $5 flares and they are
totally useless.... I carry parachute flares from now on.

Also cool are the white ones. I have one white flare with 200.000 cd.
This is ideal for any sort of night search activity.

Absolutely right, they are impressive. Anyone who wants to see a live
demo should seek out a local safety at sea seminar. SOLAS flares are
usually just part of that. I've been to a couple on Long Island Sound
where the USCG gave helicopter rescue demonstrations, and actual tug
boat captains described things on the water from their perspective.

Well worth attending if you can find one.

Perfectly legal (here) to fire the white illuminating one at an
organised training event.

Over here its fairly simple for any club to arrange hands on practice.
The RNLI is keen to get the safety message out and can send you someone
to give a lecture and demo. There are other ways of arranging a demo as
well.

I've fired a couple in practice and we also tried a buoyant orange
smoke. Tha maybe wasnt so smart with an onshore breeze :-)
