conflicting advise about winterizing

I am getting conflicting advice about winterizing my motor (90hp
Mercury four-stroke)

A friend told me that I need to run the engine "dry" for a few seconds
so as to eject the water that is still left in the impeller after the
motor is pulled out of the water.

Others claim that when the motor is pulled out of the water ALL water
automatically drains, not to worry, and that I should never, ever run
the egine "dry", even for a few seconds.

Who is right ?

Water will drain automatically if the motor is left in the down position.
Don't run it dry.

I agree: don't run the engine dry.

The manual for my 90 hp Johnson says to pull the spark plugs and turn the
flywheel (clockwise only!) a few revolutions to remove any water trapped
between the impeller's vanes in the water pump.

The "Others" are right! Let it sit with the leg DOWN for a longer
period of time (most motors should drain within minutes) and thats all
it takes. Some motors have vents that you can open and the water will
come out quicker.

Running the motor dry will only fry your impeller but not expell water
from your motor.
