Mercrusier lower unit oil, drain or not

Is it really necessary to drain the lower unit when replacing the
impeller on the Alpha 1 generation 2? How critical is setting the face
seal and can that be eye-balled satisfactorly?
Thanks,
HJJ

a problem you will encounter if you dont drain the oil is oil running
from the gallery on the stbd side that connects the upper and lower
cavities. if you have a drive saver bottle in the engine bay oil will
continue to drip for quite some time. what is a face seal?

The face seal is a small rubber seal that sits on top of the stainless
steel housing. I found out that a new seal comes with a tool that
seats this seal correctly. I am forced to change the impeller in one
location, drive the boat to another location, trailer it and go
somewhere else to do a complete oil change and lube. Would be easier
that way.
