law about guns on boats

Anybody have any URLs to any federal/state law about guns on boats?

Give the US Coast Guard web site, or maybe your local Marine Patrol should
be able to help out.

My friend's cousin is in the CG. He was at a party and I asked him about that.
In Florida specifically (other states will likely be different), you can carry
loaded firearms on your boat. You can't discharge them inside of 3 miles offshore.

I asked him if he ever had any calls about people firing guns. He said they get
them all of the time and if they determine that they are outside of the 3 mile
limit they ask the complainant if THEY are being shot at. If they say no, they
tell them there is nothing they can do.

That would be inshore, right? In that case it would be illegal. shooting a
shark seems rather unsportsmanlike provided it didn't try to take a bit out your
transom first!

I have heard that a few quick rounds into the water will keep a school of
dolphin at the boat. Makes sense since slapping the water with a paddle or
revving the motor in neutral is also supposed to have the same effect.

I'm sad to say that I know a fellow in Florida who, when he catches a
shark, shoots it with the handgun he carries on board. He fishes out of
St. Augustine Inlet. I don't know him all that well, and in fact, have
not seen him in years, but there's no doubt that'w what he used to do.

I'd powerhead a shark, but only if it was threatening me in the water.

I've come close to having to do it before (including just yesterday while
spearfishing), but never have actually had to bang one - yet.

I will not, however, hesitate to do so if it becomes necessary.

A significant number of fishermen in Florida pack. I never understood it.
