A flare gun works just about as good at close range, and is more than legal
on a boat!

Is the storing of a pistol on a boat legal or not. Does it depend on the

state
law?

When boarded by the Coast Guard, I was immediately asked if I had any

weapons on
board. This was their first question. After I responded that I had some

healthy
knives, used for cleaning fish, cutting up bait, etc., they narrowed the
question to firearms. I had none, and didn't think to ask them what the
ramifications were if I had one on board.

Speaking of flare guns, I heard that if you're boarded by Canadian
Customs, or maybe it's the CG in Canadian waters, your flare gun is
considered a firearm and you have to declare it as such when they ask.
I was advised that it's best to just leave it at the dock if you plan
on going into Canadian waters.

That said, I don't think having a loaded gun in the cabin where you
sleep in any more morally (legally you need a CCW on the boat of
course) wrong than in the nightstand next to your bed. Same
precautions apply, obviously.

I understand that Mexico also views flare guns as firearms and you DON'T EVEN
want to be busted for a firearm in Mexico. They have an idea that the PEOPLE
being armed is bad....(for who...?)
And they will will lock you up for just having a .22 cal. cartridge with no
firearm on board.
Take care
Mike
