Appropriate sail area

Appropriate sail area

Hi everybody! I have a slight design problem which maybe better answered by
boat users then boat builders.

The rig will most likely be a Bermuda sloop (main + jib) or possibly a
Bermuda Cat rig. The bare hull will be made very lite because it's a trailer
sailer to be easily handled.

The size is very large for a 1-man dinghy due to hiking gear, cameras etc
etc. LOA 5,60m (18') x 1,95m (~6½')
2 x 40Kg (pivoting centerboards) draft only 0,7m and a heavy rudder, 10Kg.

Here are the total weights incl. Crew, hiking equippments etc. (calculated):

300Kg (~750lbs) sailing fast, for fun.

450Kg Main_design-weight_ Safe _cruising /transport_ with gear.

550Kg (~1400lbs) Max (used) load

How big a sail would I need /dare to take?
You could also give me an appropriate SA/D Ratio.

** My Sandpiper 565 seems to be similar in size.
mainsail = 94 sq ft
genoa 73 sq ft

How do you find your sailpower?

What characteristics would you give the Sandpiper hull?

See:

Just got the boat this year and did't get to use it due to wife's illness &
operation that wiped out July & August.
A group of Sandpiper 565 owners have a newsgroup at

So sorry.... hope it will turn to the best!

If any one else has comments on the sailpower on boats with sail area around
9-11m2 (90-130sqft) I'm eager to listen.
