Looking at side of engine, is coil 1 = top, coil 2 = middle, coil 3 = bottom?

YES... but replacing the power pack, you do not need to know this - just
swap the wires from old to new.

is this motor of the vintage with a powerpack that has screw
connectors? if so the wire colour is the key. johnrude usually use
orange/blue stripe as the top for everything. the orange/green stripe
will be the bottom coil. unless im getting my merc and johnrude of the
same vintage confused it is marked on the pack.
