MASE generators - anyone with experience?
 

My friend Larry Stewart sells MASE generators. I'm not in the market for one,
but the subject of MASE came up during a
conversation on another matter and Larry says they have been very reliable.

As I said, he sells them (along with a dozen other makes of engines) and may be
rooting for the home team.

The Mase' is based on Yanmar. Yanmar has a good rap and makes a pretty good
engine. A couple of things to watch is you want excellent fuel filtration
(and water separation) prior to the genset and a good exhaust system after
the unit. Also, is the unit selfpriming for fuel and raw water - this just
makes things easy for you.

Check out the generator end. Is it air cooled or water cooled? Judging by
the price I would guess air cooled which is the most common. This will
increase the noise level somewhat and also increase the heat load in the
boat slightly (use some A/C). Anyway there is not a lot that can go wrong
here.

People tend to wedge gensets in the bilge of the boat. The units are
smaller but do require the same exhaust requirements as you main engine.
Stuff like X" of elevation above the water lock muffler and a loop 18" above
the water line with a gradual fall to the outside of the boat above the
water line, etc etc. Avoiding these details can cause corrosion in the
engine. When things like this happen folks bad mouth the genset. It may be
a genset problem or it may be an installation problem. Remember - even
professional installers get it wrong,

Can you ne more specific? We have had a Yanmar 3TNE78 running a trailer
mounted compressor almost daily for the last 4 years with no problems at
all even with some serious abuse. It powers jackhammers most of the
time and breathes a lot of concrete dust. That is the same engine used
on the MASE 8.8 KW except it is not marinized.

Maybe he meant a Yanmar would be a good choice to *power* a Chinese junk?
