well; here's what I did;

Replaced spark plugs
replaced cap/rotor
replaced spark plug wires
replaced carb needle valve & gasket & adjusted float
Adjusted timing
and finally adjusted mixture

Idles great starts fine; and doesn't die when going from throttle to idle.

Only problem I have now is sometimes (and I stress, sometimes) it hesitates when
going from idle to throttle --- suspecting powerjet or accelerator pump may need
to be replaced...
