Yamaha 300 HPDI
 

Late last year we purchased a boat(approx 2400 pounds) with a single Yamaha
300 HPDI. So far, and just over 100 hours, all has been well and no
problems.

During a recent vacation in the Florida Keys, a local mechanic, who was
working on a friend's boat, was going on and on about the problems he has
seen with this particular engine. I mentioned how we had experienced no
problems, he then indicated that the problems were more prevalent on bigger,
heavier boats.

Whether he is right or wrong, I am curious to know if the experiences of
others with this engine.

This is common with many people.

They can't get past the reality that their individual experiences are not
even measurable in the big picture.

They must not have taken any statistics, biology or chemistry classes? You
need large sampling to get the real picture.

In any series of products like a particular make, model and year of vehicle
or outboard motor you can have a design flaw.

If you check with several mechanics for a particular brand they might say,
"stay away from the '2001 50hp Fujitsu 2 strokes' because they have too
many problems."

I would say that Yamaha, especially in salt water, is probably the top
choice in the US and many third world countries. Mercury is big there too
and they dominated the fresh water tournament bass market.

I think for those who do not have their big outboards serviced by factory
trained mechanics it could be very different in time.

Must of been a Mercury mechanic! Yamaha makes a very good OB engine! Not to
mention longer warranty, cheaper than the Black, last longer.

Some folks, not all, have had plug fouling and lack of power problems with
both the 250 and 300 HPDI motors. Some problems are fixable such as the new
computer, oil pump, and plugs for the early 250s that the factory sent,
along with a case of outboard oil to customers. Most of the problems seem to
occur in Florida, probably due to the numbers and year 'round boatin there.
Some web sites to check out are iboats.com and thehulltruth.com which have
had a lot of discussions about theHPDI motors.

Actually he was a Yamaha mechanic, and came highly recommended/respected by
others in town. I have been very happy with the engine so far, I was just
curious to know if others, who maybe had much heavier boats had experienced
any problems.

Although, I think that I may be burning a bit more oil than when new. It is
in the shop for its next service interval, and I'll be chatting tomorrow
with them about checking on this.

run in is critical, i really cant stress this point enough.
i have seen more problems caused by incorrect break in then any other
reason. thanks to downloadable engine monitoring data this is easier
to point at as the problem. if your boat is propped correctly and you
never overload it, ie; unable to achieve max rpm, you should never
have to row.
plug fouling has been a problem with previous yamaha models. hotter
plugs and coil changes fixed this issue. it was only a problem with
motors that were trolled, idled extensively.
