Alpha One (Gen I) outdrive -- anode question

I need to replace the anodes on my outdrive.

It looks like I have located these:

2 "nut" type zincs on the transom
1 "fin" type above the prop
0 behind the prop

I know there's supposed to be some on teh hydrolic rams -- but there isn't one
there now -- and I don't know where to "look" to find it. Any clues?

Also; there's a large plate zinc under the cavetation plate -- again; no clue as
to "where" since there isn't one there to replace.

Thanks
-josh

In the meantime, the ram zincs are horseshoe shaped and screw in right
on the ram where the shaft exits the ram.

AH! Ok; so there's probably a small hole there for a screw that I don't
have...

Get the serial # of the drive, then go to:
Thanks for the link -- however, the only # I can locate is hte transom # which
isn't linked to the outdrive... :(

But apparently 1990 Alpha 1 is different than 1991 Alpha 1 (gen II)...

Mine has one on the outer ends of each trim cylinders. Thanks for the reminder,
I need to replace mine also!

Ok; I got hte outdrive s/n from Larson... 0D 354293

I looked at that page -- they dont' show any zincs, just hte "mercanode"

My cylinders don't have any threaded screw holes... so that ain't it...

Honestly; all out drives look the same to me (well; ok; all Mercury outdrives)
so I've looked and spoted lots of differences; but none looked like mine.

Thanks

The older Alpha outdrives don't have the ram or cavitation plate zincs (or
the one behind the prop). You can replace the bearing carrier in the lower
outdrive with one that lets you install a propshaft zinc. I've been told
to use the clamp-on type zincs for the rams. For the cavitation plate -
you'd have to drill a couple of holes (at a minimum). I keep my 1988
vintage alpha in salt water and it eats the fin zincs like candy. I put on
a Mercathode but it doesn't help much. I'm considering hanging one of
those fish zincs.

Thansk for the info... That's probably it.. I hope I can find my reciept &
return all these unused zincs that aren't needed...

If you have shore power plugged in, then stray current from an adjacent boat
(or even bad dock wiring) will go to ground via your SAFETY GREEN AC GROUND
conductor, causing rapid zinc use and outdirve damage. Try a galvanic isolator
(transformer) unit, GUEST markets one (WEST MARINE, BoatUS. etc) about $160 or
so. I had to install one as the boat next to me had troubles (Gee, the pumps
and wiring are corroded again, must be the wiring in the bilge water...)
'Course he wouldn't admit it and Zincs on a Gen 2 Mercruiser can run better
then $120 to replace just in parts! Cutting the AC ground will halt the damage
but pose a lethal threat to your diver and anyone else in the water at your
dock.
Good luck and a happy Thanksgiving
Mike
