84 johnson power tilt noise

I have a 84 Johnson 90 v4 that makes a creaking noise when you operate the
power tilt. It sounds like its coming from the cylinder that lifts the motor.
Any suggestions? I'm new to outboards but not boating.

Have you greased the piston knuckle where it attaches to the engine?

It also could be the piston cylinder seal, but I would grease the
knuckle first - it's easier.

With respect to parts for these, they are still available - any
Johnson dealer will have a picture of this lift unit for you to use as
a guide.

Good luck.

Later,

Tom
