Oil Pressure Audio Warning (Chaparral)
 

I have a '94 Chaparral with a Mercruiser 5.7L engine. I recently ran into a
problem when I put my boat in the water, the "Pressure Switch" (partnumber
87-805605A1 http://www.mercruiserparts.com/images/mer/2689.jpg (in picture
what is the nut and washer for? the wire just pushes on) rotted and oil was
spurting out. After replacing the Pressure Switch (oil replaced and
pressure back to normal), WITHOUT having the engine on and when turing the
key one click I get a continous audio warning, the only way to stop it is
remove the wire from the Pressure Switch. When the engine is running the
oil pressure is normal (see additional question below) and the alarm doesn't
sound, it only sounds when the engine is off and the key is turned one click
to turn on the accessories. Any suggestions??

I have straigh 40 weight oil, when running at a decent cruising speed my oil
pressure is around 60-65 is that normal or should it be a little lower?

It is working corrrectly now. Alarm when no oil pressure. And with out
engine running, the oil pressure is minimum.

That's how mine worked from day "1". Key on with engine not running means no
oil pressure so the alarm goes off! That's how it was made.

I have a 1997 Chap. When I turn the key on (not to engage the
starter, just one click) the alarm sounds, always has. Previous owner
advised it is to let swimmers know motor is going to start. Just a
thought.

Bill's correct, the switch is working properly. With the ignition in
the on position, with the motor not running, power is being sent to
the switch, and because their is no oil pressure, the alarm is
sounding. That's exactly the way it should work.

Mine does the same, But I beleive it is because the engine does not have
any oil pressure until you start the engine :-) Thus creating the
pressure that the sensor needs to shut off the alarm.

The reason the alarm, goes off, the system "tests" itself , so when
something does go wrong, you'll hear the beeping. This testing, is built
in and is perfectly normal.

Depending on the motor, the audible warning indicates 'something is wrong',
which can include low oil pressure, low outdrive fluid in the reservoir (I
had that happen at about 10 hours and took forever to figure that out),
engine overheating and other things that the motor mfr decides are important
enough to warn you to shut down and figure out what is wrong.

I'd say that the audible warning for anyone in the water is a 'bonus' of the
system, I doubt it was thought of at first as the primary use.

The oil pressure you reference is pretty normal...I get that running
Valvoline Racing straight 40.
