350 Merc - gas in my oil Any Ideas?
Gas in my oil. Boat runs perfect. First, thinking it can't be the float
since boat runs great. Changed the fuel pump thinking must be problem. Still gas in oil. A friend ran into a mechanic who suggested it had to be the Thermostat. Said the boat is not getting up to operating temp, the gas is not being burned in cold engine. Sure enough, my thermostat was not working. Tried to install thermostat, however could not figure out how to remove stat out of housing. I have a Merc design #1 SB housing. Could not get stat out of housing, so I punched out middle so water could pass unobstucted and installed the thermostat in the top of the engine where it normally goes. Now boat is running at proper temp, however I am still getting gas in the oil. Now I am wondering if the position of the thermostat may be important enough to make a difference? Any Ideas or suggestions? I am running in the straits of Mackinaw, from early spring until ice forms. Thanks, Mr Ranger |

You still might have a bad float. It could be leaking down when you are stopped
but not leaking bad enough to make it run bad. |

Engine running cold will not cause gas to get in the oil. Not sure how you
determined you have gas in the oil but when it happens it is usually stuck carb float. Or a cylinder not firing at all. "Mr Ranger" wrote in message ... Gas in my oil. Boat runs perfect. I get my thermostat out (on the same engine) by removing the whole
housing (I have to disconnect all the hoses) and tapping it out from the "down" side. There's a brass sleeve that sits on top of the thermostat that should just slide out (it just slides in) but never does of course. You could probably just grab the old thermostat with vise-grips or channel locks and yank hard but I don't mind taking the whole kit-and-kaboodle off once in a while. You also need another gasket (the one between the housing and the block). I don't know nuthin about no gas in oil - sounds bad. mike |

Mike, For whatever reason, its like the stat is molded into the housing.
It would not drive out in either direction. I finally drove the center of stat out with a chisel and hammer. The flange is still in place in the housing. Two other guys helped me and none of us could see any other way. As far as the gas in oil, I am taking the suggestion of Greg and have ordered a new float. Thanks Mr Ranger |

Bill, The first thing I did was change the fuel pump. I have the carb
parts on order and will try that next. Hopefully I don't have to go back to the fuel pump again. Thanks, Mr Ranger Could be a bad fuel pump.... Bill |
