Fishing today was...

..pretty slow...but the day was nice, until the thunder bumpers rolled in
a half hour ago. Just made it in before a local deluge, which helped
wash down the boat.

Buddy with me caught a huge skate and some croakers, while I settled for
some small to middlin' blues...but they were fun on my ultralight
tackle. We were using live minnows, squid strips and pieces of soft
shell crab. Nice sized minnows we caught in about 15 minutes at the marina.

The flounder bite is on but not today.

Is skate any good? I got a really hard sell from the seafood guy at the
supermarket.

How's that new Penn Slammer been?

Dunno for sure, but some skate is converted magically into scallops...

How's that new Penn Slammer been?

It's very smooth, but...I cannot really see a lot of difference between
it and a similar sized SS...well, the drag is a bit smoother, I think.
Good reel.

Infinite anti-reverse. I've been looking at getting a 560 to replace my
7500SS. The spool size on each is almost the same, but the 560 is lighter
and has infinite anti-reverse...which helps with hookset when doing a jig
and retrieve and the fish hits just before you reel in the slack. Happened
to me on a cobia, and I almost lost the fish. Thankfully, Cobia are
aggressive fish and hit the jig again even after I jerked it out of his
mouth.

I use circle hooks almost exclusively, so hookset depends a bit more on
the fish pulling away with the bait than it does with me yanking up the
rod, but you're right about the anti-reverse on the slammers.

I use circle hooks with live bait and fresh cut bait. It keeps the snook
(currently out of season), non-keeper-size grouper, and the tarpon from
swallowing the hook. I landed a 100+ lb. tarpon this year on a 5/0 circle
hook baited with a chunk of sailcat. When I got him boat side, I let the
line go slack, and the hook (which was embedded in the corner of his mouth)
almost fell out.

However, when using a heavy 2-6 oz. jig, you really can't use a circle hook.
If the fish hits just as you jig it upward, you'll pull the circle hook out
of his mouth every time.
