Mercury Lower Unit has metal filings in the oilI

I have a 75 Hp Mercury outboard that was made in 1984. The question I
have is that when I check the oil in the lower unit I have noiced
metal filings (silver colored). I am not sure what causes this and
what is necessary to fix this problem. Any suggestions would greatly
be appreciated. Thanks!

Where they on the magnet of the drain plug small thing filings? was there alot
of em? Only way to really find outs whats going on for peace of mind is pull
the lowerunit off.. and pull the bearing carrier out *easier said then done
half the time* and take a look at your gears.. gears could be just wearing down
Pinon gear could be taking a dump on ya too.

All depends on how many you have? If it's just a few on the drain plug then
it's normal and the cause is from clunking in-out of gear.
