Bayliner Capri 185
 

I'm thinking about purchasing a 1990 Bayliner Capri 185 w/130 I/O.
Anyone have any experiences, good or bad, with that make/model that
they could send my way? Anything I should be looking out for? This
is a two owner boat and the guy says the thing is mint, but I need
more information than that.

Bayliners are typically entry level boats. I'm thinking you mean a 140
which is a 4 cylinder. That's also the smallest engine you can get with an
i/o. You may or may not be happy with the performance. Ask for a trial run
and invite some friends. Boat performance changes a lot between just two
guys and 6 or 7 people in them. Can't say if it is a deal or not since you
don't say the price but I would not expect to pay a lot for it.

There are some bayliners that use reworked chrysler engines or
something like it ... I hear these motors suck. Look into that...

Check the boat for soft/rotten transom and soaked fiberglass, if you
dont know how then let an expert look at this.

I bought my first boat with a transom soft as butter, not knowing
about these things ..

Either way: ANY boat that runs and gets you home is fun and better
than no boat :)

I've got a 1998 Capri 1950CL with the 3 liter, 135 HP engine, and love it.
It's not a hot rod, but it hauls 4 adults and several children for tubing
and wakeboarding. it's very economical.
If you and your friends are hefty, pulling someone up on a slalom ski might
require they hang on and hold their breath longer than they'd like!
A 15 year old runabout might not be worth the cost of a surveyor, but I'd
have a mechanic inspect the engine and drive and have someone who knows what
to look for check the hull.

Yes, transom, stringers and floors are the traditional weak links in a
boat that age. They are generally wood or wood cored. Moisture/rot
in these area will create a negative value boat.

Chris you'll wanna check the hull out on the boat. As for the motor test trial
is good.. take it to a mechanic.. have em check the compression on the engine..
look it over. have em take a look at lower unit oil make sure it has no leaks.
The Capri isn't a bad little boat i've had a blast on em. i know thier no speed
boat but for a day on the water having fun tubing or some light fishing they
are good.. only one thing i dont' like about em. The V-belt

If you get this boat i suggest you have a mechanic pull the front engine mount
up and get another belt or two attached to where you can get to it if you lose
your belt cuz if one snaps on you in the water and you have it just in a tool
box or something you will NOT get it on.cuz of the front motor mount "found
this out when it happen to me had to resort to a pair of panty hose to limp it
home at little over idle LOL" oh life is dry with out a boat i tell ya.

you are referring to with the v belt? Also, if that is the engine you
have experience with on this boat, how is the power for getting skiers
out of the water? I'm not talking about doing any competition stuff,
but I may want to take a couple friends out here and there. Also,
what is the top end speed for that engine? That's a pretty small
engine for a 18.5' boat I am guessing.

The typical solution for pulling skiers is get the appropriate prop ... a
19" on my boat (18.5 ft at 185hp) and it'll pull anything :-). And for
economy, with just myself and my wife aboard, I use a 23" prop which lets me
cruise on plane at 22 mph at roughly 2300 rpm. And when there's company
aboard, I get by with the 21" prop. Rebuilt aluminum Black Max props cost
about $130 cdn locally ... I'm guessing there are better deals to be had.
