Heart Transplant...

After screwing around forever with the insurance co (getting zilch, but didn't
expect anything either), and receiving an unexpected windfall, (happy
circumstances, and thanks!), we have decided to go with the new Perkins Sabre
135 NA.

The new engine is not a counter-rotator, and I didn't want the boat to back to
port.
(Excellent visibility on the starboard side from the wheel, lousy visibility to
port).
We're going to achieve the counter-rotate in the gear box.

Everything brand new, including the fuel system, (good point made by K. Smith),
made more sense in the end than saving a few grand and rebuilding the original.

We're also installing a water-lift muffler. Didn't really have a muffler
before, except for the muffling effect provided by 15 feet of 4" exhaust hose
with water running along the bottom.

I keep telling myself I won't miss that other 30HP. The proof will be in the
pudding.
And just think, I'll get to make a two-day run back to Seattle during some of
the worst weather of the year! :-)

==================================

Good call, I think. If nothing else you'll have that warm comfortable
factory warranty feeling for a few years, and it should be a big plus
when you go to sell. I'm always skeptical of used boats that claim to
be freshly overhauled since most folks are really just trying to get
it running well enough to pass a sea trial. If you're happy putting
around at hull speed or below, the missing horses shouldn't make much
difference.

They'll be fresh horses also. :-)

JD Powers says that 9 out of 10 owners prefer fresh horses...

.... if they are made by Toyota.

Chuck, I'm not familiar with your selected heart...er..engine, but I
suspect that it will pump away, and do the job.

I'm a little surprised at your kudo to K., and I respect you even more
for it. This group can use more civility, and more respect.

As for pudding, "Please, Sir, may I have more?"

If I could do it for you, I would give 6 cups of Jello Pudding and a
bag of "Fritos" to make that run.

Vicariously yours,

This group can use more civility, and more respect.

The group in general could learn that if two people have opposite opinions, one
is not automatically an arsehole.

We do act like babies.

Smart adults don't mind critical evaluation of an idea. Smart adults can offer
critical evaluation of an idea without resorting to name calling and profanity.
We need more people willing to act like smart adults, and not emulate the worst
behavior and uncharitable attitudes heard on the radio.

When we get mud-slingers among us, everybody gets dirty. Those who feel
compelled to jump into the mud pit and fling it back only wind up getting four
times as dirty twice as fast. We are all guilty of bad behavior sometimes.

Congrats Chuck. The opinion here is you won't "miss" the 30 HP but you
will use about the same fuel for the same cruise speeds etc (uses the
same HP & HP is HP) however, diesels are happier making a bit of HP than
not.

The muffler will make a big difference noise wise however again it
might cost some fuel.

I know you talk about a change of boats but I honestly think you might
reconsider that, notwithstanding in your line of work you must come
across some unbelievable bargains; I can't imagine you'll find a
prettier more suitable boat for 2 & with a new heart..........

Good call. Did you talk to Bob Smith making this decision? I just saw him give a
short "class" on engines and came away amazed.

Good luck with the installation, and think about a thrust bearing. I am upgrading
the sound insulation of our engineroom and toying with the idea of a thrust bearing
plus 'soft' shaft coupling.

Sometime in the early 1960s, I was driving back from Ft. Leonard Wood to
Kansas City in a nice old MGA I owned at the time. About halfway home it
started raining heavily, I turned on the wipers, and EVERY SINGLE
electrical accessory and light in the car flashed on, there was a large
popping sound and it all blew out at once. And the car caught fire. I
pulled over to the side of the road, watched the fire, removed my
license plate and hitched on home. For all I know, that old MGA is still
there.

Sure was a pretty little car.
