Does anyone know if Maryland has an excise tax on boats purchased in another
state?
I live in MD (5% sales tax) and may purchase a new boat from a dealer in PA
(6% sales tax).

The tax rate is usually determined by the state and county where the boat is
registered.

So I should not have to pay PA state tax at time of Sale?

I purchased my boat in Florida and didn't get taxes until it was registered
in PA. Call a dealer or boating commission in MD and ask them.

I do know that any boat brought into MD will pay a 5% fee/tax.
I don't mean to avoid tax, I just don't want to pay 2 of them.
Reading some old posts, it looks like if I buy from a PA dealer but take
delivery in MD (have them trailer it to me maybe), then I don't pay PA tax.

Can anyone confirm this specifically from PA to another state?

Thanks, David

You should be fine if you don't register it in Pa. Buy the boat, get
title, and go to Maryland to register it. Maryland title and tax. Thats
how I did it when I bought a boat in Pa and brought into NJ. Doesn't
matter where you take delivery.

Md will screw you into paying tax again if you pay in Pa. Happened to me
with a car that I had just bought before I moved to Md. They made me pay
5% even thought it was paid in NJ.

I bought a boat in Virginia last year and registered it in Maryland and only
needed to pay the MD sales tax. This is simple to do if you have in your
possession a free and clear title.

sort of:

Boat is DNR
Trailer is DMV
Both are 5%

I talked to the dealer, they do it all the time for people out of state. It
has to be done a certain way with the trailer and the boat seperated and the
Title has to be done correctly as well. Its good news for me so I don't get
double taxed.

Depends on the state. At least some states rights are still viable.
