If only GM would buy off J.D. Power they too could dominate the Annual
Initial Quality Study. GM execs should be fired for being so stupid as to
ignore such a easy maneuver to improve quality.

Toyota And Lexus Dominate J.D. Power And Associates 2003 Initial Quality
Study
Torrance, CA - Toyota and Lexus once again dominated the annual J.D. Power
and Associates Initial Quality Study which measures problems per 100
vehicles in the first 90 days of ownership. Toyota and Lexus vehicles ranked
highest in 6 of 16 segments with Lexus vehicles topping every segment in
which they compete.

The Lexus LS 430 premium luxury sedan had the fewest problems of any vehicle
in the study for the seventh consecutive year. Other Lexus vehicles at the
top of their respective segments included the GS 430/300 sport sedans, ES
300 luxury sedan and the Lexus RX 300 luxury utility vehicle.

Toyota vehicles at the head of their segments were the Toyota Prius in the
compact car segment and the Toyota Highlander in the midsize SUV segment.

"We are passionate about building quality into our vehicles," said Mark
Templin, Lexus vice president of service, parts, customer satisfaction and
training. "It's not merely a process for us...it's our culture. This study
is one of the leading indications that our efforts are effective."

In addition to awards for individual models, Toyota plants also scored well
in the study, sweeping the Asia Pacific Plant awards including the Platinum
Award for the Tahara plant which makes LS and GS, the Motomachi Plant that
builds Prius and the Tsutsumi plant where the ES 300 and Camry are built.

I don't understand GM at all. Last summer I rented a full-size Pontiac
sedan for 10 days. It was an almost new car, with under 1500 miles. It
was, to put it mildy, a piece of crap. Pieces and parts were falling
off, the ride was lousy and the rear suspension felt like something out
of the horse-and-buggy era. And the trunk was laughable.

I've been in other late model GM cars, including a couple of Escalades,
which should be top of the line, but they were not.

The Ford products seem better to me in terms of ride, fit and finish.
Friends who own them, however, tell me the GM trucks are pretty good.

GM's quality is not on a par with some others. I owned a Cadillac and sold
it after 2 years. The transmission would roar like a tornado whenever it
rained. GM replaced the trans. and still could not solve the problem.

Now if they had only asked if I enjoyed the load noise they would have
gotten a better JD Powers report.

Harry,

This has nothing to do with make or model of vehicle. If you don't
understand this, then you never rented a car when you were young. :^)

Yeah, yeah, yeah, but this wasn't a Shelby Mustang. It was a maroon
Pontiac sedan, probably last rented by a dyslexic republican.

I do a lot of traveling, and hence, rent a lot of cars. I remember
when the Chevy Malibu was being positioned as the "Accord Killer."
Laughable.

My Mailbu rental had less then 100 miles on it, and the panel that
houses the power window switches was already falling out of the door.
The plastic is cheap, the attention to detail terrible, and the fit
and finish even worse. The Accord is like a Rolls Royce compared to
anything GM makes, never mind an Acura or Lexus.

It's sad, because GM really could build a good vehicle. I'm convinced
that they'd be near bankrupt if it weren't for the rental car
companies buying all of their sedans. If Toyota, Nissan and Honda
ever got real serious about the full-size truck market (which it seem
now they are), GM in Ford will be in a world of hurt.

Surprise winner? Sounds like JD Power got the same survey results as
Consumer Reports comes up with when it does its similar study. No surprise.
American cars have been crap since the mid to late 1970s.

Their results correlate nicely with the opinions of a ****load of Toyota
owners, plenty of mechanics, with my own experiences with the cars over 25
years, and most important, with the results of Consumer Reports studies.

Perhaps this is the real question: Based not on cynicism, but on your
thoughts about Toyota products, why do you feel the survey results are
tainted?

also think that JD Powers surveys are fairly accurate, and at no time would
they deliberate bias their survey. Gould thinks they do.

Toyota is a fantastic manufacturer. They make small incremetal changes each
model year. No big redesigns of the running gear in a year. The 1993
enging is not that much different than a 2003 engine. Makes for a very
dependable running gear. Handling could be improved. The US makers seem
to have to change big every 3-5 years, so they are always in the debug mode.
Other than Honda and Toyota, the other Japanese makes products have sucked
for a long time. A Nissan was allways a rattletrap after a year or so. The
other thing about Japanese vehicles, is they share a lot of the same
components. Would be anti-trust here. My Isusu pickup had the same
distributor as a Datsun.

Well hell....when the typical piston/cylinder fit tolerance is 1/4" plus or
minus 1/2", whattya expect? :-) Not as bad as Chrysler minivans or Neons,

Wow, that's a lot of money to spend on something that knocks 6k on it!
I'm surprised that GM isn't trying to clean up behind themselves, and
are instead saying it's carbon! Is that pretty much the end? Are you
still trying to get satisfaction, or is it a dead issue?
