several things need to be revealed. Does it do any grinding when trying to shift? Does the leaver feel sloppy? Does the engine just free spin wn going into reverse?

Check out the linkage and the shift rod to be sure they are moving
correctly, then check the oil in the L/U.
Make sure it is still oil and not water.
I assume it shifts from neutral to forward OK, if so the dog is
moving, just not enough to engage reverse.
Worst case you are removing the bearing carrier and taking a look
inside. Usually a Clymer book and the tools (mostly the puller) is all
you need for a job like that. If this is a salt water motor getting it
apart might be a challenge tho. A good puller, some heat and a little
profanity usually works.
