So how did Pachabel's Canon in D come to be known as the Christmas
Canon?

When TSO started playing with it?

Wiki: "The Christmas Canon" is a Christmas song by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO) from their
1998 album The Christmas Attic.

The song is set to the tune of Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D Major with new lyrics added. The style
is a departure from TSO's usual rock arrangements, instead being performed in the style of a
children's choir with light accompaniment from piano and strings. The group's rock version is
entitled "Christmas Canon Rock", which debuted on their 2004 album The Lost Christmas Eve.

Yup, they seem to be the ones who started it.

It's really too bad Pachelbel's original piece has been so schmaltzed up
with over-orchestration and a drastic increase in tempo. As written, it
is a sweet bit for three violins and continuo.

This is the way it is supposed to sound, though even here there are a
couple too many instruments, e.g., the lute and the organ, though the
organist appears to be bolstering the continuo part. It is a much more
delicate and slower piece than the modern versions seem to give it.

And of course I forgot to attach the URL:

I'm also not a fan of Ravel's orchestration of Mussorgsky's Pictures at
an Exhibition. It's a superior piece of piano music, overdone in Ravel's
arrangement. This is the way it is supposed to sound:
