But then I'd have to figure out a way to keep the dogs from attacking them. |

Seems like almost every house had a chipmunk running in the flower bed. I'm thinking of trying some of this: Well, never mind. They were arsenic pellets, but Amazon has apparently removed them from my wish list and no longer carries them. Oh well, I was worried the dogs would eat them anyway. |

We had a gazillion chipmunks around the yard of the house we sold last year. When we had the Sprinter camper there, parked beside the house, some chipmunks moved in and created a nest in the compartment behind the television. They stored a bunch of big, red seeds from a nearby Japanese Maple tree in the compartment which began to stain the wall upholstery below the compartment. They also chewed through all the audio and video cables for the TV, completely destroying them. It took several shampoo cleaning and rinsing of the wall to get rid of the stains. Fortunately they all came out but I had to completely re-wire the TV. They are cute but a royal pain in the ass. |

They aren't poisonous but would you want to be bitten by something whose main diet is lizzards moles mice and other snakes? I'm not worried about me getting bit, I'd be worried about the dogs killing the snake. |

Around a house they're foundation-ruining rodents. |

Maybe that's why I don't see chipmunks around here...foxes! We have foxes on patrol. You need to fit your foxes with muzzles. When we were living somewhere else I watched a red fox tree a cat. He kept the cat at bay for quite a while until the cat decided to come down the tree, swat the fox across the nose, and run off. The fox stood there dumbfounded for a while then left the yard. The same day we were visited by a herd of deer and later, before sunset, about 20 turkeys wandered into the yard and hung out till dusk when they flew up into trees to spend the night. We have...foxes, raccoons, rabbits, hawks, deer, groundhogs, geese, an occasional field mouse*, little lizards, cardinals, bluebirds, snakes, and possibly bears. My wife saw a "large mammal" shaking a tree while it climbed it and it "definitely was not a cat or dog." * About once a year, a little mouse finds its way into the house...and one of my cats plays with it for a while and unless we catch the mouse and release it outside, the cat rips it to shreds. :( |

My wife saw a "large mammal" shaking a tree while it climbed it and it "definitely was not a cat or dog." I said earlier, I bet you either have bears or will have soon. They are rapidly expanding their habitat and coexist with humans quite well ,,, until someone gets hurt. I bet hogs will find their way to you soon too. You may not be as accepting of them when they start rooting up all of your wife's ornamental plants. At that point you may start rethinking the idea of "feeding the birds". * About once a year, a little mouse finds its way into the house...and one of my cats plays with it for a while and unless we catch the mouse and release it outside, the cat rips it to shreds. :( I think we have a rat in the screen cage (or garage) somewhere but I have not been able to catch him. If there is still any indication of that when I get home, I am catching a snake and turning him loose in there. Within a week or two there will not be anything else living in there. I am OK with most critters but I do not have any chickens. The people around me go nuts with the armadillos and raccoons. They are OK in my yard. People also have problems with the gopher tortoises. We have them tagged and named. They will dig a huge hole so you just need to stay on top of it and get them to pick another spot. If you catch them early, just throw a rip rap stone in the hole. They think they hit coral rock and move on. |
