Hurricane Matthew - After Action Report
 

Good news is that we just got back to the boat and everything is AOK.
The inflatable dinghy was full of water but the outboard and gas tanks
stayed above. It started right up - thank you Mr. Honda. :-) The
generator on the big boat stayed running for the entire two days so
the fridges and freezer are good, and the batteries are all charged
up. Thank you Mr Kohler. There's some tree damage along the edge of
the creek where we anchored but nothing that impacted us. The
surrounding area (Green Cove Springs, FL) is without power and has
some relatively minor damage.

I'm worried about daughter in Savannah. They can't get back to there house yet because of downed
trees and flooding. Their homeowner's insurance has a $9000 deductible for wind damage (e.g. felled
trees on roof), and they've got one of the better policies in the neighborhood.

Thanks, hope your daughter is OK. We have similar insurance issues
with the boat (very high deductible), and it doubles for damage in any
"named" storm. To add insult to injury, for anything other than a
total loss, they start making depreciation adjustments based on their
estimate of the useful life of the damaged component, e.g., paint jobs
are estimated to have a useful life of 10 or 12 years, canvas a useful
life of 6 years, etc., on and on. For all practical purposes we treat
the boat as though it is self insured.

Good to hear everyone is OK. Here in the midlands of SC, we got 4" of rain and some wind. The deck and yard is covered with leaves torn out of the trees, and I have one small limb down, but nothing other than that. We lost power for about 30 minutes.

Our governor, Nikki Haley, did an excellent job of getting folks to evacuate. She ordered school buses to be used to evacuate folks that couldn't drive themselves out. Quite the contrast from New Orleans where we all saw the pictures of the flooded school buses while the mayor and governor blamed Bush.

After seeing her a couple times, the RNC could be looking at a 80%
electoral college sweep with Gov. Haley.

She's been a great governor. but SC has a weak governor system, so she is limited, but she has pushed the "good old boys" as much as she can to get off their asses to do what they should. The SC state house is loaded up with do-nothing dead-assed democrats, so we're saddled with that. I think she has a future ahead of her.
