The wheels on the Bowflex...

.... go round and round

Today's handyman project
http://gfretwell.com/ftp/bow%20flex%20wheels.jpg

We seemed to be getting more exercise moving this thing than working
out on it. These wheels engage with the floor just about the time you
hit the balance point when you rock it back and you can roll it around
like a hand truck.

My next project is putting the slotted wheel emitters on the main
pulleys so it will interface with a PC through the mouse port. I
figured out the perfect slotted wheel will be old 3.5" disk platters
with 72 slots cut in them and shot black. It will be about a half hour
with a Dremel tool and then I have to extract the photo cells and LEDs
from a mouse card, mount them on a board and put this whole thing
together.
I figure you could get quite a work out just playing solitaire or
browsing the web.
If this works the way I hope, I will be looking for games you can play
with a mouse.

Keep us advised on this project. I have the BowFlex Ultimate and do find it a bit awkward to move around.

It looks like he solved the moving problem already with the wheels he attached.

This worked out pretty well. I had to drill and tap a few holes and
make those plates. It wasn't tough.

Do you wish the wheels were 6 or 8 inches farther apart?

I did put them about an inch or 2 farther apart with the 2 extra nuts
and washers but this is a heavy SOB and even with a 5/8" axle, I was
worried about it bending. It is fairly stable and I have not had a
problem with it tipping over. If I want to go any wider I may need
more structure or a thicker axle. I was just using what I had in the
garage.

Bad news on the slotted wheel idea. A disk platter just laughs at a
dremel tool. Henc offered to cut the slots on his CnC machine and I
may take him up on it. He says he has a 2mm cutter and a disk platter
is 95mm in diameter (298.3 circumference) so the lands for 72 slots
will be just a tad wider than the slots. (2.14mm)

That should work.
