Hey Wayne and Greg ...

I just checked the Southwest Florida Eagle cam. Say's it's cloudy and
37 degrees.

Hell, right now it's 35 degrees here and we are under a blizzard warning.

Better keep an eye on the weather down there :-)

Right now it's 47 where we are, headed for 67. That's freezing by our
standards but the wind is down a lot from yesterday. I was supposed
to go out on a Grady White up in Sarasota Bay yesterday to watch my
oldest son race his sailboat but conditions were too severe and the
whole thing was cancelled. The bay was totally covered with whitecaps
and blowing spray. There was a 45 ft sailboat banging into the rocks
that had broken loose from somewhere. As my son would say, it was
blowing cats out of trees.

All those whitecaps are know as 'sheep in the meadow' on our coastal areas.
North coast of California does have a lot of real sheep in meadows and
fields.

That is up in North Ft Myers. I don't think it got that cold down here
nearer the water. It has been cold tho. I hope it warms up a bit for
Bill but he better bring a wet suit. Key West is reporting 67.7f water

Always bring the spring suit. 70 degree water is like 55 air temps, and
how any times in 55 degr e air do you run around mostly nekid? I see
driving from the keys to Orlando, I can drive to the west, through the
Everglades, via Naples. Is that a nice drive? Daytona is the 21st, and I
think staying away from the east coast would be smart then.

It's a great area for boating, lots of relatively protected water and
many fishing/cruising opportunities. There's quite a bit of sailboat
racing also if you're looking for a new activity. By my standards
it's too cold in the winter however.

If it stays above zero at night, it's fine by me.

But if I do not take in the race, traffic will be a nightmare.

Sorry. I thought you meant the *motorcycle* Daytona.
I went once. Lots to see and enjoy there but leave the wife at home.

Some parts of it are interesting which is more than I can say for I-95
on the east coast. I-75 is all good road and you can drive 80 to 85
mph on most of it except for rush hour around Naples, Ft Myers and
Tampa. There's a way to go back roading for part of that trip which
will save you some miles and expose you to a bit of old Florida
atmosphere. Get off I-75 at exit 164 (Punta Gorda) and then go north
on rt 17 until it crosses rt 27 just outside of Haines City. Go
north on rt 27 to I-4 and then head east to Orlando. You go through
a few small towns along the way but traffic is light and the roads are
good.

If it gets much below 60 I will put on long pants if I am not working
pretty hard but that is rare. Still t shirt and boat shoes.
If I am cutting trees or something I would still have my shorts on.

If you take the turnpike you get away from the east coast traffic a
bit. If there is nothing in particular you want to see over here that
is the way I would go. We really don't have a road that goes straight
from here to Orlando. You can go up through Sebring on the 2 lane
blacktop or up 75 to 4.
I4 can get ugly in the afternoon both on the Tampa end and on the
Orlando end.

If you do find yourself on I75 I am at exit 123 (ph 992-4005)

I am leaving for Michigan on the 22d for my ski trip.

You can also do 31 to 70 to 27
There are a number of variations but nothing direct.

It's also pretty close to halfway between the families of my two daughters. We're also looking at
the Trilogy development at Lake Norman. I really want a place where I don't have to worry about the
damn yard and can take off for a couple or three months at a time.
