Just below freezing here this morning. Kinda a shock because it
happened so suddenly. Pool system went into "Freeze Protection Mode". Turns the pump on and opens all valving connected to the controller. Fortunately, it is scheduled for closing on Tuesday, although the forecast is for warmer weather next week. |

North Atlantic in the middle of the winter had to be coldest I've ever experienced. After a week underway, the ship returned to Newport, RI because the ice was 3 inches thick, covering the entire superstructure. Deck apes couldn't keep up with the chipping. Gets dangerous due to becoming top heavy, reducing roll limit. |

Gee they wouldn't let us go home ;-) (Weather Station Bravo in November/December 1965, 50 day patrol) It didn't get to the point of chipping ice off the superstructure but we were pretty top heavy. I had reason to go up to the 05 deck and the ice on the ladder was an inch thick, making the rungs about the size of a fat baseball bat. We were rolling and pitching a might and spray was hitting me from the bow. Gets your blood pumping ;-) |
