Kindle Paperwhite
 

A daughter gave me one about three years ago for Christmas. I didn't use it until the
past few months, making trips to the library and getting 'real' books instead.
Finally I learned to use the damn thing. The library has a great selection of e-books
and downloading them is a snap.

If you've not tried one of these things, you might consider the idea. I love mine,
but am now thinking of upgrading to the Fire HD 8. Bigger screen, etc.

For a while I was downloading books to my iPad to read. Works well but
for some reason I still like a "real" book.

For a while I was downloading books to my iPad to read. Works well but
for some reason I still like a "real" book.



I like real books also, and haven't stopped with them. But, the Kindle to 'real'
ratio is now about 4 to 1.

I like real books also, but the iPad is really nice when traveling. As to
the Kindle. I gave my wife a Kindle Fire some years ago. Is nice as a
reader, but for web and mail, sucks. Finally gave her an iPad Mini.
Better al around. Was on close out at Walmart in Medford, near Roseburg,
so not even a bad price. The grandkids love the Kindle for games. They
are 5 and 7, so non violent games.

During her last years we gave my mother a Kindle and set up an account
with Amazon for her. She was a voracious reader all her life.
When she passed away I took the Kindle and couldn't believe how many
books she had downloaded and read. It was good but I found the iPad to
be easier to use and read.

All I'd use the Fire for would be reading books. Although, now that you mentioned it,
the price of the iPad Mini is pretty decent. Might have to look into that. Do you
have to contract with a carrier, as with a smartphone?

The iPad I have is an older one ... Gen II. I connect via my home
wireless to the Internet to download books. It has the ability to
connect via a cell phone carrier as well but I've never set it up to do
that.

You can buy a wifi only mini or a mini with wifi and cellular for about
$100 more. You do not have to activate the cellular, however, and if you
go that route, if you ever want to sell or trade in the device, you'll
recover the $$$ you paid for having cellular capability. That was my
experience when I sold my ipad.

OK, that's what I'm looking for. I don't want a smartphone type instrument for which
I have to automatically pay $40 a month whether I use the internet or not.
